Inside me, a light : it is yours. I wanted to talk about this light and how you gave it to me. Because with it, I can now wander through the darkest, farthest corners of the earth, the deepest forests, caves, deserts, even beyond, the seas, the space, I can set sail and go everywhere without ever getting lost. And at the end of each and every corner, at the end of earth itself, you'll be here with me, you were there all along. So let us travel, there is so much more to see, together, through the lens you were, the one through which I'll forever see all things be. Today, you'd be twenty-nine. An arrow of light passes by, goes through my window, and who knows, it might be you : wishing me luck, telling me that where you are, years don't count. To the aether, once more and forever, we celebrate you.
Who are you ?Ryan McNamara is a photograph, filmmaker and visual contemporary artist. Previously featured on our platform in 2019 with his short Sulphur, he's been collaborating actively with a broad range of young french artists. He wandered from Chicago, Illinois, where he was born, to Europe and the Americas, and as travelling became a fondamental component of his life, it resonated through his work, weaving a faint outline that connects each image to another, forging a coherent, psychedelic body of work.
From territory to territory, perhaps Ryan captured the shapes of the outside to try and reveal what was inside. Innate to him, a will that burns without consuming things, buth rather, onto them, projects a light. This light, I think, can be felt while looking through the images, the souvenirs, the magic he left us with to sort out and experience.
Ryan's Work
All life, animal, mineral, vegetal, appears and intertwine, testified for. When I go through the images, I sense traces of existences crossing his own ; echoes of travels I feel as if I experienced also. And inevitably, a stark truth emerges : the superimposed spirits of a world in decay, bending until they break, in the latest stages of capitalism. In an attempt to make a digestible and intelligible representation of his work, we narrowed it down to particular findings and periods of time.
About his 2022 photography book Linguagem Chemica, Ryan writes : "Poisonous fruits, plants and trees fortified by thorns, ruins of slavery, decaying colonial architecture ; all merge together as a message from a land that is hungry for its revival. A spirit seems to hover over the continent, frozen from its dark colonial past. Nothing lasts long in the jungle, the humidity has a beautiful way of quickly deteriorating everything that doesn't belong. Plant intelligence absorbs the abandoned structures, retaking its place in the jungle and returning the framework to its preliterate attitude, delivering the message in their own chemical languages. All photographs and double exposures were created analogically on 135 colour film."
Ryan is standing on ruins that are alive. From a place of both question, fascination, and abidance, his camera tries to make their soul perceptible. His analogical approach to both portraits and wildlife, natural areas coded as shrines, allows a layering of organic shapes, highlighting the dynamics of life itself as he understands them in this certain instant. And the momentums created from it unleashes, suddenly, an emotion.
Ryan held the concept of Jung's synchronicity close to his understanding of all things, wanted to tells us about the sacred nature of trivial, coincidental things. He intended to make us realize chaos and peace coexist in the same core because they are bound to, whether we like it or not.
The portrait of a man he loves connects with a branch piercing the air. The eyes of a stranger meeting yours and then the scorching sand. Between an open hand reaching for the clouds and an old tree stretching its arms out to the sky : a passage. Such games of juxtapositions etablishes the possibility of dialogue, illuminating both meeting points and areas of conflict.
In his approach of sculpture, the same interplay of opacities slowly unveils shapes, levels of transparencies ; cristallized objects caught in transitional states, as if the matter composing them could not settle into any single one. These objects and the artist's iconography whispers a story of hope : what is moving, what is inert, what is dead, what lies uncomplete in sheer waste carries the same weight as pure finitude. What has been lost somewhere will be retrieved in another realm - loss means the end, loss means beginning again.
Both the sense of self - the true self beneath what we call the surface - and the core philosophical idea that all is one, according to Ryan, is always and everywhere in activity, moving, roaming. As this idea grew by, his imagery grew invested by light as well as obscurity. Interested in what was impure, he seeked for the damaged, the scars of the interior, wounds that he could not cure, but rather try to understand, and figure how to deal with.
Aspiring alchemist, he merged together practices, materials, and the tools to conceive them, pushing his eyes - interior, exterior - to the very limits of perception : he guided us beyond what we might have believed. So, as I transmute myself using what you helped me learn, I forever pledge to make more alchemy with all things, with you.
The contemplation of the world, of its ceaseless wonders, was what he'd tell us about next, and next again, until he'd reach a melting point where he could dissolve anew and reshape himself ; over and over. He'd always want to involve those near him to reshape with, within ourselves : a mischievious black-smith.
"When I met him, I was exhausted, in a sense that is diffult to translate to the strictly european mind. I was at another New Year's Eve party on the beach, one that was less crowded than the others, having an experience i once loved since i was a child : the black sand of Etang-Salé, the soft touch of it while i watch people dance, their hope of anything new, a new world, the excitement, the fireworks, the bass entering my skin while I sweat, any music will do. I've had NYE dancing maloya and others acid tribe, all of them on this little portion of sand bordering the island.
That night, it was black, but it's an understatement : nothing in reunion island has a solid, unified, coherent color. You have to look at everything with the right intentions or you may see nothing at all. The sand of Etang-Salé isn't black, because it come from the volcano meeting the Indian ocean, thousand of years before us. Volcanos leaves behind them dark rocks, glinting with minerals that are deemed unprecious, yellowish olivine revealing it's gold beneath the blazing morning sun. only someone with that same sun, lodged in his eyes like an eternal beacon, would see it at night. Ryan is the only one i've ever met with that affection.
He saw me going out of the dancefloor and immediatly grabbed my hand and said my name. If any other stranger has grabbed me that way, I would have gone ballistic. Especially a white gay man smiling so hard at one of the most anxiety-inducing party of all times. I don't really know why but his face was so familiar, I instantly smiled back. Then he told me his name, and a bunch of stories, told by friends of friends, about a past I didn't belong to, fell into their right places.
Ryan was part of a mycelium of people who shared places to live, created art, cried together, loved and still love each others, a big family of freaks I accidently bumped into a few years ago. Not even fifteen minutes later, we were talking like we've known each other for a lifetime.
I had to mention his race : as I said I was exhausted. Disgusted even. My island never got to be free from those who enslaved her, and that night, they were all around me. My body never got to be free : the violent touch that is given to the Other is so alienating that the fight to protect your mind feels relentless and lonely. At one point, we stopped walking all around the place and sat in a circle of people to keep talking. He was telling me about a specific part of his teenage years in the US that I happened to know the context of, mostly because of my early work about isolation. It also felt like he didn't care or even noticed that english wasn't my first language, at all, which felt weirdly nice, not feeling observed when doing the vulnerable exercise of trying to communicate complicated feelings with words so simple they could sound cold, considering the seriousness of the conversation. A french word slipped out of my mouth, and after staring at us for a few minutes, some drunk girl that was sitting in front of us blurted out “mais t'es d'où toi en fait ?” and the whole circle went briefly silent, as if everyone was waiting for the answer since we sat there, twenty minutes ago.
Il a répété plusieurs fois “that bitch was lying, man you were the only brown person sitting there, that's what !” en secouant la tête.
“Must be so hard to be asked where you're from all the time, when they're the ones who came to your place. I mean, why didn't she ask me ? I'm the one with the american accent, what the fuck man...”
"We just understand each other without even saying anything", et "I am forevel grateful that the universe brought us together".
Tu me prends par la taille, tu me soutiens et tu me dis : « You deserve better ».
Tu y as contribué.
You were the first person to tell me that there was magic.
That it was real.
I was not ready to accept it but it is like you knew that one day I would find it.
I just listened.
I remember we were smoking out my window
You told me that when it comes for me to accept it.
You were a lot braver than me.
Even then I was scared and you were ready for what came.
You felt things that most people do not their whole lives.
Like when you knew that my father was dead before I even told you.
When my father died in front of me the light of the room exploded into white.
And the morning that I found out you were dead the entire sky was red.
The clouds were red.
I could see you on the edge of bed.
You are magic.
I use that word dead knowing that you are very much alive.
I see you and I feel you all the time. More than even my own family members.
I hear you telling me to shut up and I also hear your words of strength.
To keep going.
You saw what we couldn’t see and you are still guiding us.
it took me a long time to find the magic you told me about in my studio years ago.
And I try to accept it.
There was a lot that could have been said while you were here in this realm but now I talk to you in the next one.
I miss you, I feel you, I see you, I hear you. I love you Ryan.
His mind laced with magic, one that was rather a principle than a force, was what drew others to him : when I met Ryan, I knew we were friends already, as like-minded creatures tend to meet through matter and through time. And as I go through life pushing what feels like a heavy veil ever since he's merged with the stars, I'll always try and remind myself to be like him : kind.
